Playoff time!

2011-09-29

Well, tonight was the last night of the major league regular season, and boy, was it worth the wait. I just spent most of the evening trying to simultaneously watch three baseball games (courtesy of DVR and ESPN3). I saw the Phillies come back to beat the Braves in 13 innings. How about that first big league win for Justin De Fratus? How about 102 wins for the Phils, their most ever?

I saw the Orioles, down 3-2 to the Red Sox and having waited out a goodly rain delay (I knew it would happen ‘cause it was pouring at our house too), beat Jonathan Papelbon starting from scratch with two outs. The O’s celebrated as if they had just won the wild card, and can you blame them?

Then just a couple of minutes later, the Rays, after having been down to their last strike in the bottom of the ninth, completed their amazing comeback to beat the Yankees (and also their amazing comeback to take the AL wild card from the Bosox) with a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 12th.

It was nuts! And it was great fun to watch – comebacks, walkoffs, runners thrown out at the plate, some exciting double plays. Here’s hoping the playoffs are as entertaining. We’ll be root, root, rooting for the Phillies around here, but in a playoff series, anything can happen – it’s that small sample size. So I am not going to make any predictions. I’m just going to try to enjoy it.
